    Word of caution on RTIs

Yes! I have to tell people all the time that they can't start work until I give them the permit; just because the fees are paid doesn't mean they're good to go!

What online permitting systems do you use?

How is it going? how long have you used it? We are going live in a couple weeks and I'm losing my mind.

Should pre-submittal meetings be required for all major building permits?

We do that for land use proposals, the applicant pays a fee and applies and then staff reviews and will meet with the applicant to talk feasibility and let them know what will be needed to continue. For bldg permits, I think it would be nice, but if it's a "major" project it's likely gone...

Do you seal your building permits?

Do you mean when they're issued? In that case - no. We email them, and if someone requests them in person, we just print them. I know that in the "before times" they would get put in a plastic card slip thing, but not laminated. I haven't seen anyone do that on site either.

Encouraging contractor engagement for portal improvements

We have a quarterly(ish) developer's forum where we provide donuts/pastries and coffee and let them know what's up in the department and what's coming down the pipe. We just had one in September and gave a tour of our portal that we're going life with this month. It seems to work?

    Permit revisions.

There is a "permit revisions form" that we use and ask the applicant to submit with the changes; if it is a big review and a lot of time is spent reviewing, I would charge an additional fee/fees as appropriate. Once the revisions are approved, the plans get re-issued.

Would supplemental permits be necessary for ADUs in the future?

Thank you for asking what the OP meant, I had the same question. I would think so; an ADU is a separate structure. The only time we may not is if it's a conversion and the actual shell of the bldg is already there. But if it's a new build, we'd require the same documents we require for a NSFR.

    Deferred Submittal

Hi! I looked at a permit we have that is currently being submitted in phases so that I could answer your question. Your jurisdiction may do it differently, but how we do it is we make a note on the plans noting the deferred submittals and when they submit for those, we charge them. For...

Which type of permit office would you rather work with/for?

I'd rather work with (and for) one that takes longer but is more efficient. One that is less professional and less consistent means more re-work from staff and likely more money from the applicant. The one that is slower likely spends a lot of time in their code ensuring that they are following...

What's more important for a permit office to have: timely permitting or effective enforcement?

Wow! Excellent question. Effective enforcement is a tough one, because of things like staffing, and prioritizing. What is a top priority for the resident may not necessarily be for the staff (ie it is not a danger to life/safety, it's just an eyesore). Timely permitting I would say is overall...

I did not know that CivicPlus does permitting....cool! I'm interested to see how that goes.

Any ICC Certified Code Specialists here?

I'm studying for the ICC Certification for Code Specialist so I can get combination designation. Does anyone have tips for success for the exam? Later this summer I also intend to take the residential building inspector test before I start the WABO plans examiner courses.

    Permitting and Code enforcement.

That's generally at the inspector/building official level.

    Permitting and Code enforcement.

wanted to add, we are complaint driven, so I'm not out hunting for things.

    Permitting and Code enforcement.

Yes, I do! in terms of land use/building violations. I am not in the field doing it, but I do draft letters for things like tall grass or signage violations and have the building inspector take photos when he's in the field. The code compliance officer who handles things like nuisances, animal...

What online permitting systems do you use?

That's what I'm hoping we get too. We are small as well, our population is less than 9k. :)

What online permitting systems do you use?

Yes! Will do! :) I used Dude Solutions (aka/fka SmartGov) at my previous job and I loved it, so I've always been a bit impartial to it. Tyler seems to have what we will need (and is loads better than Vision) so I am excited....but I'm also nervous to go 100% digital due to our demographic.

What online permitting systems do you use?

Right now we have Vision, but we are implementing Tyler and hoping to go live in Mid-October.
