Getting a permit for recreational target shooting

Has anyone ever tried target shooting? I'm not into hunting deer like my relatives, so I was thinking about what else I could do at the national parks when I found the target shooting. Is it difficult to obtain a permit?

You should check with a park ranger, because some areas are closed off from shooting. I believe it's a safety measure. The type of permit you'll need will depend on the state. Overall, though, gun permits are pretty easy to get.

It's very state dependent. For instance, in Tennessee, only those who are 16-years-old or older need a permit for target shooting at a Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency shooting range. However, in Oregon, no one is required to have a permit to engage in target shooting. Some areas are off limits, though, so you'll need to obey the postings and ask a ranger if you're unsure.

You may need a Firearm Safety Certificate. My brother took the test a few years ago; I didn't hear him complain about it being hard. National parks usually have dedicated areas for shooting, and they may not provide firearms, so you have to bring your own.

Thank you for all your replies! I tried to look up information online and now I'm confused about the Firearms Safety Certificate, gun license, and gun safety license. I'll check the closest park and ask the rangers there!
