Permits required for an animal shelter

I've long been passionate about rescuing animals. I'm beginning to think that now's the right time to get more involved. Can you help me determine which permits I'd need to open an animal shelter in California?

What county are you in, Cass? The laws around animal shelters are pretty area specific in your state. I'd say you'll need a kennel permit at the very least. Obtaining one of those will depend on how your property is zoned. If you're planning to be a nonprofit organization, you'll need to apply for 501(c)(3) status, which can be fairly tough to get. This could get very expensive.

I'd probably open it in Butte County, because it's more affordable than somewhere that's more popular, like Orange County or Los Angeles County. Renting a building in those areas would be cost prohibitive.
