Good Morning,
I received a submittal for a pre-manufactured self-water vending building. What group would it be under?
This is my first water vending project and not sure if it should be classified as Utility (Misc.).

Thank you,

Good morning, Maria. Since you're permitting a building/structure, I think posting right here in the Building & Planning forum should work. 🙂

Don't worry too much about posting in the right forum, just do your best. I'll move your post (and you'll be notified) if I think the topic really belongs somewhere else.

I'm having a hard time picturing this. Is it really a building, or is it more like a vending machine? Which permits are required here? It sure sounds like an interesting project.

Good Morning Cass,
Yes. They are small structures where customers bring in their water container to fill them with water. Please see attachment:

Thanks for clarifying that, Maria. So what exactly is your permitting question with this one then? You're wondering if it falls under "Utility (Misc.)" code provisions?

Calculating the permit fee as Utility Misc. under the BVD August 2023.

Great question. What do the planners say?

Let us know what the fee is and where you are, when you get the chance. Inquiring minds want to know. I know it's a popular thing in warmer climates.

I have never seen this here in Washington/Idaho area, but we would likely have it in two categories.

There would be the utility portion if they are installing new lines and a meter.
If it is a water tank supported directly upon grade, if the capacity does not exceed 5000 gallons (18,927 L), and the ratio of height to diameter or width does not exceed 2 to 1, it wouldn't require a permit.

The building portion, which would be considered a detached accessory building (this building wouldn't require a permit though if the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet (11.15 square meters) (IBC*) or 200 square feet (18.58 square meters) (IRC*). It would still be required to meet the setback (PCC 17.75.080(7)) and lot coverage (PCC 17.75.080(5)) requirements. For prefabricated structures we just have people give us the manufacturers specs/set-up documentation.

Hope this helps some!
