What is your building permit turn-around time?

It can be anywhere from three to six weeks around here. I think it's amazing that some of you manage a short turnaround time of two weeks. I hope it's appreciated in your neck of the woods.

Is my zoning variance up to par?

Luckily, I can easily meet this requirement. I'm hopeful that it'll be approved. Kayward, I don't have a HOA or similar governing body to worry about. I'm grateful for that, because I've heard it's much more difficult to receive a variance in that instance.

Getting a permit for recreational target shooting

You should check with a park ranger, because some areas are closed off from shooting. I believe it's a safety measure. The type of permit you'll need will depend on the state. Overall, though, gun permits are pretty easy to get.

Food truck permit for an event

In my city you'd be able to do this without a permit. So long as you're serving a small group, and you aren't charging for the food, you wouldn't necessarily need a permit. I'd definitely see if it's necessary before spending money on the application.

Is my zoning variance up to par?

I applied for a permit to build a garage, but my application was denied. Unfortunately, the garage is too tall and wide to fit within the zoning limits. I can't make it any shorter or narrower, or I won't be able to store my boat inside the structure. A workaround is to get a variance. So...

Article Things to keep in mind while getting a sign permit

In my city, you'd need a permit to post a political sign on public property. A lot of people don't think about that, but I know we can't be the only city to have such a requirement.

    Your permitting musts

I believe permit avoidance is more often driven by a lack of understanding, a desire to avoid the hassle, or a time crunch, rather than just trying to save a few bucks. Therefore, I'd be sure to emphasize that it's necessary to get a permit for an extension. They're highly noticeable, so the...

On San Francisco suing the EPA

It's going to the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, I believe that the conservative-majority court will use this case as the perfect opportunity to erase our current water protections. It's not looking good. I'm surprised that the city of San Francisco is even making the argument, instead of...

    Permitting Apps

I've heard good things about GEO.works Mobile. I believe it works on both platforms and is supposed to be particularly useful for those who work with utility permits. I can't say I've ever used it, though.

    How to determine what wildlife...

I'm not an environmental expert by any means, but I'd probably start by checking the National Marine Fisheries Service map for your state to determine if any wildlife might be affected by runoff. NOAA also has some handy tools that map out critical habitat areas and conservation areas. Another...

    Disasters and permits

After the recent spate of disastrous hurricanes, I'm curious as to how permitting impacts the push for recovery. I can't imagine that the laws are paused while the area recovers, so how do cities rebuild in a timely manner?

    Permit system to stop over-tourism

Okay, I have to ask where tourists are getting sprayed with water pistols. It can't be in the United States, since we love our deadly guns too much to mess around with water pistols. I would like to apply for the job of water pistol sprayer. It sounds like a hoot. Setting up additional hoops...

Encouraging contractor engagement for portal improvements

You'd probably get more feedback if you offered a prize drawing for those who participated in the survey. That's assuming your office has the budget for it, of course.

Do you seal your building permits?

In my municipality, you're not supposed to alter the permit at all, unfortunately. A common workaround here is to make a copy of the original permit, write "copy" at the top, laminate it, post it in a public area, then file away the original.

Why does permit require their approved electrician?

It seems like a money racket to me. In order to have my building permit approved, the electrical work must be completed by an electrician who has been registered and approved by the city. Why can't I hire a family member to do the job, who is a licensed electrician? I'm not knowledgeable...
