If you happen to live in San Diego and like to workout in public, you may be required to first obtain a permit in order to do so. At least in certain areas. On your property you'll be fine to workout to your years content.

There was a revision on the municipal code that made it illegal for groups of more than four people to use public lands for recreational use without first obtaining a permit. This includes workout groups, yoga, dog training, etc. It seems the police are making sure to break up any recreational activity that is not permitted to be there. Even going as far to ticket people, especially teachers putting on these workout groups/classes.

Amy Baack, a yoga instructor recently discussed how its really sad the city is doing this to people who're providing free services essentially. She also mentioned how the city wants them to obtain a permit, but it hasn't made it easy to do so as they're willing to file a permit.

This new law was more geared to stop the excess food trucks making their presence known, but it has reverted to those who come to these parks to exercise and all that fun stuff. A group of yoga instructors have recent hired an attorney who had served a cease-and-desist letter to city officials. So it seems like they're going to fight this.

Shame on San Diego and these new rules. I get why they enacted them for the food trucks and other type of shops popping up, but to target people working out in groups is weird to me. What's even weirder is that a lot of these people are putting off free yoga classes or workout groups and if anything they are doing less harm than the food trucks they were against.

They aught to make it faster and easier for people to obtain permits for this.

Even though getting permits for simple things like working out in public land during the public holiday sound too silly, however, I believe people should not shy away in getting required permits. While getting permits can be a hassle but once you get the permit, you can use it without any kind of trouble

I was curious if there was an update on the case. The last article was in July when the yoga teachers lost the battle in court. I wonder if there are so many illegal cases related to yoga classes for the city to be this strict. Have they considered creating a permit system to teach yoga instead of being this restrictive?
